What the research tells:
While masting a language takes many years and much effort, research in word frequency (how often a word is used) tells us that the most common 2,000 words in a language make up about 80% of everyday speech and text. In other words, if you are able to master these "nuts and bolts" of a language, you can make the transition from explicit study (purposefully learning new vocab) to incidental acquisition (learning new words by reading and speaking in a context). During the next 18 weeks, we'll do our very best to cover at least the first 300 words in Spanish. These will be the basis for what goes in the gradebook. However, I honestly believe that every student in this class is fully capable of mastering 2,000 words in the time we have left in the schoolyear.
